You may be familiar with the concept, ‘state your dream clearly if you want to live an inspiring life’. The inspirational and meaningful acts you are doing at this moment are what will bring you closer to your future. But people often get stuck and are unsure which action to take or what to focus in order to make their dream life a reality. They see others doing certain acts and achieving success, so they do the same expecting similar results. Sadly, their actions do not lead to similar success, shattering their aspirations, leading them to quit, self-criticize, or blame others. It is vital to be clear about the path you are heading towards if you want to create the life you love. And it is even more important to know where you are on your journey. How do you operate? What are your behavioural codes and patterns? Knowing the ins and outs of your leadership style and your preferences help you identify your strengths and weaknesses. Once you are armed with that knowledge, it is a complete game-changer.

If you have read my previous article then consider taking a closer look at your wheel, which will give you a real understanding of how you live and it provides insights on how to prioritise your goals so that you can focus your time and effort on those areas that are most important to you right now. We need to be mindful of the intertwined threads of our life, so think deeply which category needs to be emphasised first to gain some alignment in your life. A major part of goal setting is not just identifying what you want, but also identifying how it’s going to impact other parts of your life. Most people are ignorant of this and end up living an unfulfilled life. Those individuals might reach great heights with their career goals but do not have functional relationships; they have name and fame but not great health. I am sure you have seen and heard of people who are living a life that is completely out of alignment.

Desire to live a fulfilled life and understanding the process is sometimes not enough. To achieve a goal faster, a common tendency is to look for shortcuts to skip steps in order to save time and effort. Success and growth require sequential stages; like learning to stand before walking and learning to walk before running. Including a little bit of fun in the process goes a long way. So what does fun have to do with anything? Let me introduce you to the FUN Sequential Growth (FSG) Model shown in the graphic below:
• ‘F’ represents Foundation
• ‘U’ represents Upgrade
• ’N’ represents a New notion

FUN Sequential Growth (FSG) Model

When applying the FSG Model to your life, it is important to understand that each growth stage plays an important role and skipping stages is not a fast-track solution. However, going through the stages and passing the levels as they come helps us to evolve and become a person who is ready for success.

For you to grow, a self-assessment is a must to understand who you are, your decision-making process, your thinking pattern, your needs, why you do what you do, and so much more.  Most of the time what stops an achiever from obtaining their desired results is not knowing and understanding their own level – where they currently stand. If you are new to the business world, it is important for you to think about how to build and maintain the foundational elements of your business, which could be looking after day-to-day operations, working on ways how to generate sales and business, setting up a system for invoices, or ways to deliver quality services.

However, after running a successful business for quite some time, focusing on maintaining your foundation too much would hamper your growth. You need to move to the next stage of growth and upgrade your business or else you will not be able to progress to the next level of success. For an experienced professional, growth in this stage may look like automating business systems, having software for accounting purposes, focusing on leveraging marketing systems, hiring professionals and so on. As you keep progressing, maintaining foundational elements and upgrading becomes irrelevant. To stay ahead of the game, the business world demands new notions, new ideas. For example, in new product development, you must study your market and understand their needs and demands, and provide solutions accordingly. You disrupt the old pattern of running the business which keeps you ahead in the game.

So, I hope that provides you with insight into why sequential growth and having a little fun is important to your success. Understanding your current state is just the beginning of gaining clarity about what actions need to be taken next. Using the FSG Model in your life is important and it requires the awareness of self-assessment. Knowing yourself helps you in the same way as it helps your business; helps you understand where you are and what needs to be done next, not what others are doing to achieve success.

Self-awareness is the key to success because a self-aware business owner or an individual has the flexibility to acquire a new notion from maintaining their foundation. Self-awareness also helps you understand when you need to pause on a new notion and it brings your focus back to your foundation.
